Thumbs up: Dude! *Dude!* Windows 7's absurd "snap newly opened folders to the bottom" behaviour for the tree pane in explorer.exe has had me frustrated since the day I decided to upgrade from XP. Your little program has just enabled me to actually interact with my filesystem in a sensible way again. I love you so much right now. I actually like 7's start menu so I'm glad you've made your fixes all modular and configurable. ClassicShell *also* seems to solve (as a side effect of the way it adds itself to explorer.exe, I'd wager, but still) the issue in 7's explorer.exe requiring a physical click in either pane in order for mouse scroll events to be delivered there, so I no longer need the WizMouse application to fix that, which itself causes issues with some games. You, to coin a phrase, are the hero this city deserves. I am hoping you've got a donate button.

Thumbs up: GREAT!!! Not only does Classic Shell bring a start menu to the Windows 8 desktop, it brings a start menu that, in many ways, is BETTER (and certainly more configurable) than the start menus found in previous versions of Windows. And so I for one am happy that Windows removed its start menu so that I can now add "Classic Shell" in its place. Thanks to Classic Shell developers for providing such a great product. And thanks to Microsoft for finally allowing for upgrading the start menu. I especially appreciate that Classic Shell offers (under the "Controls" tab) a way to configure hot-keys for 1) opening the classic start menu and 2) going to the Windows 8 "metro" start screen. But I'll just note that the menu descriptors under the "Controls" tab are a bit confusing. In particular, the menu descriptor "Windows start menu" would be better labelled as the "Metro start screen" (or similar) so as to avoid confusion. Once trivial complaint: I notice that, after selecting "skip metro screen" on the "Windows 8 Settings" tab, the metro screen still briefly flickers before the desktop loads. Not a big deal, but irritating nonetheless.

Thumbs up: Classic Shell is FANTASTIC! And for those who would say some people are stuck in the old world and "those who have been desperately holding on to Windows XP" - yes. That's correct. Because the Start menu had become an overly complicated, over sized mess. I actually really like the new "Don't call it Metro" Start screen and application interaction. But I still like the speed, simplicity, and functionality of the original Windows XP Start button. Now I can have it all, and to the haters, kiss my ass!

Thumbs up: Great for Win8. Gets rid of that awful quilted tablecloth and returns me to the proper Windows Desktop with the Windows orb and Menus for easy access to my programs. I hope it still works in the final release of Win8. If MS prevents programs such as this from doing their stuff then I will not use it. It appears to me that Win8 should not be called Windows at all since all Metro apps appear to work only in full screen so you cannot work in multiple programs copying and moving content from one program window to another or dragging and dropping files from Explorer into programs such as Adobe Audition.....something I do regularly. I am referring here to Metro only. Thankfully we still have the old desktop available to us but once that is gone we are back to one program at a time like old DOS.

Thumbs up: Classic Start Menu 3.6.0 turns Windows 8 RTM from a big nuisance into a great operating system, getting rid of all the irritations that Microsoft created. I do a lot of software testing, and have a 3-monitor setup, in which I use the left and right monitors for full-screen virtual machines or Remote Desktop sessions. Using Windows 8 on the right-hand monitor without a Start Button is such a pain - when I try to click the hot corner, I just minimise all the windows on the central monitor (having got the Aero peek square next to the clock). So great to have a Start Button, even if I actually use it to open the Metro Start Screen. Good to have the option of the old Start Menu too, if I want it. It's also fantastic that you can disable the hot corners in Desktop mode, but they're still active in Metro mode - the perfect combination. Finally, it's great to be able to boot straight to the desktop. In short, Classic Shell lets me use the Windows 8 Desktop as a normal desktop PC, without any irritations from Metro, but also lets me try out Metro without it getting in the way. A truly fantastic piece of software, thank you very much!

Thumbs up: Despite rumors that Microsoft has killed this capability in the final Windows 8 RTM "gold" package, the Classic Start Menu seems still to work with the RTM version. (It's a week before I can get my hands on the RTM code, but a friend with with the right "connections" has managed to get an early copy of the RTM and has demonstrated this to me via screen sharing.) Yippee! ... It looks to be THE way to avoid the clumsy "Metro" tiled interface for desktop non-touchscreen mouse-and-keyboard interaction with Windows 8. Eat your heart out, Microsoft, for doing away with the Start Orb and trying to block attempts to come up with an alternative,

Thumbs up: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Back to a sane interface. Why did they have to "improve" it by jumbling and scrambling or removing everything that made sense. Maybe OOPolution of the brain synapses. Now I rediscover that things I spent 15 years getting used to are back in a logical order and still work. Here's an idea for new development: All MS developers need to accept, through a secure encrypted network -- mini-bombs. No effect until they reach a critical mass (say >10,000 or so) then they get blown to ***** for being voted counter-productive.

Thumbs up: Classic Shell is an awesome program. I much prefer it to the Vista and Windows 7 Start Menus. It's tremendously customizable and you can export and import all the settings so that they can be applied to other computers and login ids. It also provides a great replacement for XP-style function buttons on Windows Explorer. Again, customizable and one can export and import settings. I use its Classic Explorer function to hook to a good third party filesystem search program to replace the execrable VistaW7W8 filesystem search. But the best thing is that Classic Shell 3.5 puts its beautiful Start Menu on Windows 8 Consumer Preview, turning a sow's ear into a silk purse! Settings from W7 will even import into W8, providing instant customization.

Thumbs up: Classic Shell is amazing, will really come into it's own, and be essential software when Windows 8 is released! With Windows 7 Classic Shell offers substantial improvements not just in familiarity but in form that follows function. On Windows 8 and Windows Server 8 Classic Shell will be essential for anyone that needs to get work done with a PC due the integration of Metro as Start Menu, the inability to multi-task when some interface features are running, and massive increase of user input required (mouse clicking and window manipulation) to accomplish the same tasks that on previous versions of Windows required no input, a single mouse click, much less input intensive operation... On Windows 8, Classic Shell will literally save lives on mission critical systems -- this is not an exaggeration, but first hand experience! It is a fantastic application, with a level of professional attention to detail that's astonishing for FOSS Windows software and Windows 8 would be useless without it.

Thumbs up: Awesome. Installing / configuring it, I had the explorer menus go away, and it took a while to get them back, and this is exactly why I needed this. Leave it to microsoft to take a perfectly good user interface and re-invent it. It's as though they took an automobile and moved the pedals and steering wheel to new locations. This puts some of the controls back where I like them. Especially frustrating with Win7 explorer is the way the file tree would randomly re-adjust itself just when you wanted to expand a branch, and this seems to fix that. Have to use it some more to confirm.

Reverting back to the "flyout" style Start Menu from XP was great, but not only reinstating the Explorer Toolbar but making it fully customizable is where it's at for me. The redesigned Start Menu and absence of the Explorer toolbar were the first things I noticed—and immediately hated—about Win7. Classic Shell goes a long way to not only get around that, but add many extra functions/options as well. A truly valuable find.

I've been using Classic Shell since about day one. Without Classic shell, I probably would not be using Windows 7. (still maintain an XP machine for important work as it is. Windows 7 is nothing more than Vista with gobs of make-up smeared on) The sad thing about Classic Shell is the need for it. It is disgraceful that Microsoft took the attitude, "screw you, it's gone and it is not coming back" - without even offering any excuse whatsoever during development. Poll after poll showed that 40% of Windows users indicated a preference for the classic start menu and Microsoft just thumbed their nose at every one of us.

This is one of the "can't-do-without" programmes for me, and I guess anyone who wants to actually *use* their computer, and not let their computer train them. Ever squinted trying to find the programme you wanted to launch, looking into the default "All Programs" list? Ever tried to go 'up' one level in Windows Explorer, and all you managed was to go 'back'? Ever missed the clarity of the Windows XP start menu? Or the cascading "Programs" list? Well, despair no more, for Classic Shell is the answer to your prayers! Rejoice, my brothers and sisters! :)

This Plug-in provides the essentials that Microsoft SHOULD have provided. The world get more and more "stupidified" because some people are too lazy too learn (and people willing to learn get accused of not wanting to learn the "new (STUPID!) way". Microsoft delivering "Windows 7 was my idea"...??? (A lot of stupid people out there if you call reducing features an "idea".... I need to work, not look at eye-candy!)

This project is absolutely fantastic. Microsoft's attempts to make my computer stupid and unusable may continue; however, Classic Shell not only makes it usable again... it actually makes it even better than the XP menu! I can't express how great Classic Shell is. I love its existence and will support it for as long as I'm using Windows!! If I had a suggestion for the future, it'd be something that can fix the horrendous over-spacing issues in the system tray! ;-)

Very well done. I like the "up" button and the Shared Folder Overlay options that were taken from Win 7 by Micro$oft instead of giving options to enable disable. Interesting to see great creative comments like the one from Marc-Andre. Make's me think that he works for MS. But regardless, he and MS both agree that all these thousands of people downloading this program, including the 500+ that already gave it great reviews, should all be forced to change into something they think is better. That, instead of the logical "giving an option". Yeah... we should all evolve into zombies... like Marc-Andre.

I really missed the xp style start menu in Windows 7. Especially the annoying shutdown button in win7 is set as default and it is very irritating when you accidentally click it while you were trying to restart or log off.

A MUST HAVE for anyone who has become aggravated by Microsoft's relentless efforts to steer users away from the clarity of the file management concept that made the initial success of Windows, based on what information really is and how it is actually stored on a computer and how humans classify it in real life. This utility is a great start. Now if only this concept could be expanded to take over the rest of Windows dismal, fuzzy 'Internet Explorer'-like shell, whose sole purpose seems to be FORCE users to organize information the way it sees fit, instead of allowing users to organize it in personally meaningful ways!
Monday, January 31, 2011, 6:29:07 PM | anonymous
Well, the idea is excellent. But I had to stop using the menu part because of serious incompatibility problems, apparently of a graphical cause, leading to recurrent shell crashes. A contrario no problem with the Explorer toolbar (nevertheless I prefer QTTab, its Explorer toolbar and so useful tabs).

Call me old fashioned if you want to, but I love the classic start menu. It's unfortunate that MS did not include it with Windows 7 (really, how hard would it have been to include this option?). The good news is that this program does the trick and does it better than anything MS has ever produced.

YES. i think most of windows user stilleed the classic menu back in action. it is not just because we're already get used to it. But, this is the easy way (at least for me) to navigate the task bar. THANKS A LOT

This program has made my life worth living. I've resisted moving away from Windows XP for years since the new Windows menu is so incredibly annoying. When I built a new machine, I added a solid state drive and knew it was best to just move on to Windows 7. Fortunately, I had already discovered Classic Shell and knew that it would be a relatively painless process. It's an almost perfect program. Classic Shell is light-weight and unobtrusive, and it provides me with the flexibility I need to customize the Windows Start menu to work the way I want it to work instead of forcing me to use somebody else's conception of what the "perfect" menu should be. With just a couple of clicks in the settings (switching the Left-Click/Shift-Left-Click behavior to display the regular menu and then setting the Windows Start Menu to a Cascading All Programs menu), I was able to get 90 percent of what I wanted (both the cascading sub-menus instead of the cramped standard style and proper default sorting with folders listed first). My Windows menu is better than it's ever been. I work with a lot of client computers (mainly using Server 2008 or Win7), and it's always a traumatic experience when I have to use the out-of-the-box Windows menu. ALL HAIL CLASSIC SHELL!

When I came across a reference to Classic Shell for customizing Explorer, I did not have much expectation. I had already been through Explorer++, Q-Dir, QTTabBar,Total Commander, and Ultra Explorer. Changes to the Start Menu as described almost seemed impossible, so I did not think about it. When I tried installing Classic Shell, I had a major problem. Half way through the installation, I got an error saying permission was denied to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs It took quite a while to figure out what was wrong - "System" was not showing up in the Security Permissions for that "..\Start Menu\Programs" folder, and adding that solved the issue finally. Then the program installed, and it froze Explorer, and the start bar was doing weird things - and I thought - well, another hacked together half job. But what the hell, I rebooted, and opened up explorer. It seemed to be working all right. I followed the instructions in ClassicShellReadme.rtf and started tinkering around, first with Explorer, then with the Start Menu settings. After half an hour of tweaking things - I am now sitting here amazed at how perfectly everything is EXACTLY the way I want it - I mean EXACTLY! If someone was to wander by and look at me working, they would never know I am not on XP ! My Start Menu uses so that the icons are small - I can have my own folders at the top of it with my own frequently used programs - and the cascading sub-menu is such a relief after the pain of using the Win7 new Start Menu. Your page: "Why Classic Start Menu?" says it all perfectly. Explorer - with the tree line structure on the left! (Windows XP Classic - Navigation Pane Style). I thought I would never see that again! I can instantly see now where I am down the tree - how many subfolders down, and the left arrow "Back to" the last folder - such a time saver. And the beloved ALT+Enter to see a file/folder's properties, used so so many times a day is back! And back to the old dialog for File/Folder conflicts - the new Win7 one was so invasive. The only "tweak" missing from all this was found long before - putting back the Quick Launch area (available on most Win7 tip sites). ibeltchev - you have made Windows 7 behave the way I want - a way that is efficient - and conducive to productivity. Thank you so much for your amazing work - and for sharing it with the community. You have made my time on my laptop (many many many hours a day) much less stressful; much more enjoyable!

This is just awesome! If you want those treelines back OR if you want those triangles (expand/collapse buttons OR folding buttons) to not fade out when you're not mouse over them or the explorer navigation pane focused (by ie. shift+tab to it) then this can be done for the left side nav pane of explorer

Best tweak ever! I am using it on a netbook with W7 Starter. I hate how new menu has scroll bars. I think the person who invented the new start menu was either mentally sick, high on drugs or really drunk. Classic Start Menu offers the best usability, somebody please tell MS to stop re-inventing the bicycle. Cheers.

It is a great tool that solves many issues in Windows Explorer. The most important two are: - It fixes the folder scrolling to the bottom of the screen after expanding it. - It adds automatic refresh of the right pane when you are navigating the folder tree with the arrow keys.

This is better than any Start Menu that Microsoft has ever made. With version 2.90, it is super easy to totally customize every aspect of the Classic Start Menu. I can't believe I can finally make the Start Menu behave exactly how I want! I wish most programs in the world were this well done. It is stable, fast, easy to use and its skinnable too. I usually don't pay for freeware but this one deserves the support of the community. If you use this regularly, please contribute monetarily to the author. I say this because when future versions of Windows come out, I hope Classic Shell is still updated. We all know Microsoft is not going to bring the Classic Start Menu back or a bunch of the Explorer usability features. Classic Shell is a no brainer. I still can't believe the developer is offering this for free... it really is that great.

There is no real CONS for this apps. Some people just argue... blablabla, fear of changes... We don't have any fear about changes... YOU MUST understand that not all changes are good, specially with the weirds and sometimes illogicals choices of Microsoft. More stupids options is still... more stupids options... Why doing heavy and clunky when it can be sweet and simple :P It as always been the MAIN problem with microsoft... so many flaws in their designs... :(

If i ever get round to using windows 7 i would install this straight after the os is installed. But until then Windows 7 has a long way to go before it beats windows XP. I have many great video hardware and such that xp knows but am told Windows 7 doesn't know. New hardware there is none for these new smaller motherboards that are 64 bit. Not even for pci-x it is all still pci, great for xp but for no other os. Actualy i download this now, to remind me what it is called. So will get newer version if ever use vista, windows 7 or newer based on the same.

The horribly cramped menu offered in Microsoft Windows 7 makes navigating a pain. And so many features that we've gotten used to in previous versions of Windows have been removed from Windows 7 as to make it difficult to do what used to be easy. Classic Menu and Classic Shell restore the easy navigation and many features that we need -- as well as offering wonderful and long-needed enhancements. These are great tools!

This program allows one to not only change the start menu in windows 7 to look like like the classic start menu in XP and windows 2000 but you can also change all aspects/items and placement of items in said menu. The program is small in file size, easy to use, does its job well and amazingly it's free (very rarely do you get those last 2 together)! Note: Some ini files will need to be edited manually to get the full effect of this program

One request - I would love to have the "keep taskbar on top of other windows" option put into Classic Shell (which MS removed) so I can have my program windows on top of the taskbar again - autohide does not cut the mustard, esp has I have the taskbar on the left over 1/3 of the screen

Awesome, This actually makes Vista usable! If I was a MS developer, I would likely bury my head in the sand for not offering this simple option. Thanks to the guys responsible for this!

Thank you so much. The program installed flawlessly and popped open my programs folder. It was like finding an old friend. Why did M'soft ever leave this functional and simple interface. Thanks for bringing it back!! My pleasure to make a small donation to your work. Keep it up.
Saturday, June 26, 2010, 4:10:01 PM | anonymous
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH to whoever did this. I will be donating with paypal. Microsoft really needs to appreciate whoever did this, as this was my biggest complaint, and main reason I did not upgrade any of my pcs to win7 until now. I just wanted my UP button back, and now it seems I have full functionality (and control) of my system back!

Great work. It was the first thing I looked for after installing Windows7. Just got there from XP64, so I missed all the annoying fun in Vista. Menu speed could be implemented in GUI for less experienced users (if such are bothering to find and install this nice utility). Thanks a lot.

I enjoy the 'XP' asthetics that Classic Shell adds to my Start Menu Applications. I no longer have to scroll through my applications as they now lay right before me in one vision. My regards for this applications writer's, as it is the dog's doo-dah's. Thank you for letting my Start Menu become more practical. =TriggaHappy=

I recently installed windows 7, because of the good reviews. However, when I found that the horrible new start menu can't be changed to the classic XP style one, I almost had a heart attack. After some searching, I found this project. It's perfect! Just what I was looking for. I even thought of different start menus with different mouse buttons, and, lo and behold, the option was there!. Thanks a lot, keep up the good work!

My biggest frustration with Windows 7 / Vista have been the UI changes where usability has been entirely removed in the name of progress. This project allowed me to have access to the functionality and style that I prefer and am very grateful for everything that has been done to date.

This little addon has helped many of my customers since I have found it. A lot of my customers that are finding they have to upgrade from XP to vista or 7 and they call me telling me they are lost and don't know how to get anywhere. I have started using this little app for them and it makes life a little easier for them to make the transition. It has even gotten me a couple of jobs into my shop because other people using their computer that feared upgrading for this very reason have chosen to upgrade after seeing this. I wanted the developer to know it has indeed help many of my older customers that don't like change much. ___________ Chuck http://www.myputerdr.com

Thank you so much for adding the classic windows up arrow. I am an advanced user, but I still find that up-arrow extremely convenient. In fact for me, this seemingly small unimportant factor-- the windows up one directory arrow, is something that i view as critical and important. I searched high & low for an open source solution to my problem-- it's truly a shame microsoft got rid of this feature. maybe it's no surprise that 10+ years ago, all the most talented managers started leaving microsoft and heading over to google. Anyway, back to my point--I don't even use the classic windows menu--however, the up-arrow this application adds is extremely helpful to me. It's funny--there's an application called the mavis up-arrow, that costs $5, that only adds the up-arrow. However, this up-arrow matches the color and style of my windows 7 operating system--and it's free. Thanks a ton you guys. As a small token of my appreciation I have written this review. Hopefully, people start realizing this small, but very valuable sourceforge application is here-- classic shell.

Classic Shell is the BEST! I'm a power user as well as an instructor for blind and visually impaired computer users. I am happy to say that Classic Shell works with screen reader programs such as Microsoft narrator, ZoomText, and JAWS (Job Access With Speech). Clasic Shell offers first letter navigation as well as drag-and-drop shortcuts from the desktop. The other emulators either lack or fall short of that feature. Keep up the good work. I'm rooting you on!!!

@Kira san: Let the user decide, what is the correct way for them. Users like me prefer the oversight of the startmenu. Well sorted since years ans so it should stay. Classic Shell the top notch of replacements of the startmenu. Get it!

Hi, this seems great. The only problem for me is that I like the Windows XP style menu. I like the "pop out" style menu, but not neccarsarily the "classic" view? Is there any way to get the "pop out" menu but keep the Windows 7 view/look?

Friday, February 12, 2010, 9:31:35 PM | anonymous
Thank-you , thank-you for this. It is exactly what I was looking for to replace the chaotic mess that is the Windows 7 Start button (or whatever MS have renamed it). MS version tricky to navigate, confusing combination of functions, very poor customization options. To me Start should be easy, left-hand side contains programs, right-hand contains the libraries you have configured. The programs could be grouped in any way meaningful to the user e.g. "Office" "Multimedia" as containers for links to progs. Same idea for the right-hand side link to folders grouped (via libraries) in anyway meaningful to user. Retain "All progs" at bottom LHS, Retain option to launch Explorer at bottom RHS. W7 search is unreliable for content search. I use Google desktop. Rant over.

I am saved! Ever since I saw Win7 RC1, I had assumed that the Start menu functionality was broken and would be fixed in the final version. But when I saw that it was still there, it dawned on me that they meant it to be that way. Even worse, I realized that they had actually paid people to do that. How awful can you get? The Start menu was the one thing in 10 years of Windows development that had worked right. Now I can rest in peace.

God this application RULES. Never would I have thought I'd be shedding tears of joy to simply have the functionality of the old Start Menu back, but this one does it perfectly. Seriously, ibeltchev, if you're responsible for creating this, I am forever indebted. Thank you!!
Monday, January 25, 2010, 5:19:13 AM | anonymous
Something that actually works. For those that like the classic Start Menu this is great. Unfortunately I like the new Start Menu except for the lack of an open when hover in the All Programs section. Being able to use the new Start menu with that feature would make a usable menu system with the eye candy intact. One thing I would change is to use a different name or to use different keywords when submitting to search engines. It was difficult to find where programs like CSMENU came up in many of the reviews when searching for Windows 7 "Start Menu". Since I use a good dual pane file manager rather than the one built in to Windows the Classic Explorer part was not as important, but my wife disagrees as she hates the pop up's when copying, and I agree that this program improves MS's interface dramatically. Thank you for a well thought out and implemented program. For anyone who wants the classic start menu back in Windows 7 this program works better than the others. On the other hand can I beg for you to see about writing a program to modify how the standard Start Menu works? Adding a "open when hover" feature to the Windows 7 Start Menu so that the categories worked like the libraries do would make that menu system almost as quick as this one and for those of us who like eye candy a better choice.
Monday, January 25, 2010, 2:55:02 AM | anonymous
Thank you! I'm left-handed; customized mouse menus in Opera let me keep my right hand by the keyboard arrows and my left hand on the mouse. This creates a fast, rhythmic, work flow, and now I usually only lift my hands when I'm writing. Typing commands into Windows slows computing down, for me. So I've tried every Windows 7 patch I found, but yours is the only one I'll use! (I'd like to be able to change the selection highlight background color to match my desktop, though...) You have my gratitude, admiration & best wishes (for what they're worth)!

Excellent Project - SUGGESTION: One thing that was better in Win7 start menu, and is gone now with this Classic Shell, is a direct option to ShutDown/Restart/Switch User. Now we have to go through the (unnecessary) dialog with the options, while in Win7 we could Restart with 1 single click. Perhaps this could be a feature request ? :)

Classic Shell is awesome!! I couldn't stand not seeing the total size of selected files in the status bar in Windows 7 Explorer; with Classic Shell -- I now know immediately the total size of selected files. The Classic Start Menu is also great to have again. Thank you ibeltchev for developing and publicly sharing this software!! The Microsoft developers are complete idiots for dumbing down the Windows 7 status bar.

The classic Start menu is just awesome but Explorer navigation buttons are not that good looking as of Windows XP. :(

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Please add option to disable auto arrange in explorer, I have an idea: all folders could be treated as desktop folder, then we`ll get native option to disable auto arrange. But I don`t know how to realize it, please help.

Difference to the default Win7 start menu: Less klicks, easier to configure and no more switching between mouse and keyboard. Great!
Sunday, January 10, 2010, 1:02:35 AM | anonymous
THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU, the only problem remain: disable auto arrange
Saturday, January 09, 2010, 9:12:36 PM | anonymous
Up to now definitely the best "classic" startmenu! Also like the detailed documentation. Shows that the program is thoroughly developed!
Saturday, January 09, 2010, 8:14:30 PM | anonymous
Great Job. I like it very much. Thanks a lot.
Saturday, January 09, 2010, 1:07:55 PM | anonymous
All the features mysteriously removed from Explorer... like file sizes once u select more than 16 files...
Thursday, January 07, 2010, 11:13:22 PM | anonymous
Great replacement for the claustrofobics Vista/Win 7 start menu. It would be fine if they implement completelly the XP start menu look.
Wednesday, January 06, 2010, 11:13:32 AM | anonymous
I can't believe it! You folks made Windows 7 usable again. I was going to return to XP because of this space nonsense.. I love you guys! [donating]

I found Classic Shell a few days ago after lots of grief about the Win7 UI (switching from WinXP), and apart from the good old cascading start menu, I really started to hate Windows Explorer. Thanks so much for bringing back all those useful features that have been removed by Microsoft in the past! Finally, I can use my computer as fast and effective as I could before.
Wednesday, January 06, 2010, 4:29:48 AM | anonymous
Saved me from Win7's "improved" star menu. :)
Tuesday, January 05, 2010, 8:13:12 PM | anonymous
Awesome! Finally I'm no longer encumbered by the stupid "you have to use it because we think its good for you" MS UI
Tuesday, January 05, 2010, 6:07:23 AM | anonymous
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!! I'd be happy to make a donation. It is truly sickening that MS is so mentally deficient that you had to spend time fixing their design flaws. One thing that would be nice is to have an option for the search field on the classic menu - but just not in the default position. I'd have no problem with the Win7 search field if there was a way for me to move it to a different position so that it would not steal my keystrokes that I want to use for navigating the start menu subfolders. Now can you code up a way to disable the Ribbon menu on apps that are cursed with it? :)

Great lightweight windows tweak -- no background task! :-) The up button in windows explorer is also great to have back.

Absolutely what I was looking for. Further improvements are looked forward to, but this product is already head-and-shoulders above the competition (including the pricey for-pay competitor "Seven Classic Start", which I purchased and briefly ran). Please keep up the amazing work! I am an IT administrator of several networks and am very particular about my own user interface and that of the servers whereon I operate — this is such a blessing of a piece of software. Thank you!

It works great!!! But I need more customization
Saturday, January 02, 2010, 3:52:15 PM | anonymous
Would it be possible to have a little bit more Aero style WITH keeping small icons in the main menu? Unfortunately I've lost the option to have small icons AND the highlighting based on Aero theme.
Saturday, January 02, 2010, 11:15:48 AM | anonymous
This rules. MS screwed up by removing the classic shell functionality in the otherwise brilliant 7 - this brings it back! How do we donate?

Thank you for this, now win 7 works for me

Love it. Can you find an Ability to disable folder auto arrange .
Sunday, December 27, 2009, 3:21:50 AM | mss
This is just great! Two things though.. With xp powertoys/tweak ui/registry change, I was able to change the folder expansion delay in xp.. I would prefer to be able to set it to zero if I like that. Also it would be nice if the fade was optional because even if I have fade disabled in the rest of the windows 7 ui the classic start menu keeps fading when it opens. Again... this is just what I needed, thanx!

This software is amazing! I was looking for something like this for some and now I have it. Everyone should try it! Thanks a lot! Now, I just need to fix the auto roll in list view when I want to click in a file in the last right column and explorer will become a good tool again!

Long awaited! Meets a frequent need - thank you indeed! Might be worth adding to the instructions about "View Classix Explorer bar" that the Status Bar needs to be turned on, too. I've had it turned off under Win 7 since it didn't add any useful information. Now, it does.
Monday, December 21, 2009, 8:27:18 AM | anonymous
Just wonderful. Thanks so much.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009, 4:08:33 PM | anonymous
I'd absolutely recommend this app. Since moving to Win7 I've been through so many alternatives to Explorer looking for one that doesn't look like the rubbish MS has foisted on us. I had decided on XYPlorer (and still use it thanks to the many powerful extra features it has) but this little app has brought me back to using Explorer regularly. Amazing. And the Classic Menu is really great (though I would prefer to see it invoked by the "all programs" button rather than hijack the whole Start menu) and is *much more stable* than some alternatives I've tested -- no flickering or Aero issues! Again, amazing stuff, well done!
Thursday, December 10, 2009, 11:34:12 PM | anonymous
Bug? If I add further folders in start menu's root, I cannot drag'n'drop items in these folders. Within programs folder and its subfolders everything works as intended.
Thursday, December 10, 2009, 7:14:12 PM | anonymous
at long last a proper classic start menu that actually works. Brilliant! I would have liked to see a donation facility for the author.

Great work on implementation. Been missing the Up button for a looong time. And thanks for giving the option of Big Icons! Please keep up the fine work.

Love this program, I've been stuck with Windows 7 shitty start menu & thanks to Classic Shell I've got my favorite start menu back!! :)
Tony Martin
After what you have done for the Windows community at large!!
Emeka Ekeledo
Very impressive application. Classic Shell makes Windows 8 usable. Thanks for coding it.
Rajan Patel
This is such an amazing application; I want to thank you for making Windows (after XP) usable again.
Brian Bartlett
This will definitely do well. [Still prefer wrapping windows in a NeXT interface ;-). ] Great job!
Chuck Renner
Kudos to the Classic Shell team! This is an awesome alternative to the Metro interface on Windows 8 that is so ill-suited for Desktop computing! I love you guys! Every Windows user should know about this!
Andrew Matthews
The Windows 8 Metro workaround is great and is very useful
Sam Caldwell
Thanks for your excellent work. Lets hope the servers can take the traffic when Windows 8 hits the market. Cheers!

Timothy Carroll
This app is a sanity saver for me. I'm always embracing new technology, so I'm far from a luddite, but it drives me crazy when basic features are REMOVED from Windows just because the UI designers decide that nobody should want to user computers a different way than them. I look forward to Classic Shell continuing to save my start menu sanity when the atrocious Windows 8 metro start screen makes its RTM debut this year.
Ronnie Maxwell
I just discovered this software and it looks amazing. I tried Win7 long ago and hated all the features they changed/removed. I returned to Windows XP and while I'm content with it, there are disadvantages (no DX11, for example). Classic Shell makes me want Windows 7 again.

Mark Del
Classic Shell has been a staple of my Windows 7 install for over a year now. I especially love the more recent search feature, and the older "most used programs" listing. It's the best of the modern and classic start menus. I also install it for people migrating from XP to 7, to ease the transition.

Mary Lamb
I love what Classic Shell has done with my start menu
Lance Wilson
Works great on Windows 8 CP! Thank you very much! I had a hard time learning Windows 7 start menu and had given up on Metro UI...UNTIL THIS! You could have made a lot of money on this...yet you made it open source. You guys are heros.
Sam Caldwell
Looks great and thanks for your efforts. What a shame it is needed! Microsoft is shooting itself in the other foot by making customers look for 3rd party fixes. This will create confusion and Vista like negative PR. I just don’t understand the reckless arrogance of Microsoft management in forcing people to abandon the Start Menu and Button which defined the Windows user experience since the introduction of Windows 95. Thanks again for your excellent work but suspect it will not prevent the train wreck waiting to happen.
Paul Cornett
just loaded this on win8cp.. awesome. With some tweaks, metro can be a good thing... but this fills the gap beautifully
Ryan Spyky
Many thanks!! It's finally great to see the CLASSIC START Menu on Windows 8 CP! appreciate the hard work gone into this.
Paul Rokicki
Thank you for this. Much appreciated!!!!!!
Darrel Balucos
brilliant! it simplifies our start buttons in my internet cafe...

Classic Shell is an awesome program. I use its Classic Explorer function to hook to a good third party filesystem search program to replace the excrable Vista/W7/W8 filesystem search.
But the best thing is that Classic Shell 3.5 puts its beautiful Start Menu on Windows 8 Consumer Preview, turning a sow's ear into a silk purse! Settings from W7 will even import into W8, providing instant customization.
Lord_Glorfindel
Best Start Menu alternative I've Found. Works flawlessly with much flexibility and options.
ianhudson1
Compensated for Microsoft's blunders. Software provides any one (or all) of a wide range of xp-related functions (personally used the 'up a level' button). Windows really should have come with these functions built in...Would highly recommend to anyone who misses the xp features this program provides.
Malchak
Makes the Windows 7 Start Menu Customizable to your needs. It looks much cleaner. Increases efficiency as well as making your desktop shortcuts unnecessary giving you a cleaner desktop. I highly recommend this software. Nothing out there right now can compete in ease of use and effectively solving your problems with the current Windows Start Menus. It's easily customizable to have everything you need at the click of an icon.
billearl
Makes Windows 7 (and Vista) MUCH more usable! Extremely useful, rock solid and well supported. Amazing (and free) software! Highly recommended.
Klatuu
If your computer use is about getting things done rather than glitz, Windows 7 can disappoint. But by turning off the Aero and other effects and installing Classic Shell, Windows will be faster and more responsive, and you will once again have a Menu that allows you to organize things they way you want. Program works great - highly recommended for serious computing.
John Tesla
Essential core software. Of all the software, what is more essential and "core" than the Windows explorer interface and the start menu, and task bar controls? Classic Shell allows you far more control and options for this than any product I've seen; it is free and runs without problem on more than 10 computers (family, friends etc), and lets me/other users make the Windows interface the way I want, not as Microsoft would force on me. Fabulous! If you hate the Win7 setup and want to revert back to XP - or any other custom setup - this is what you need. Crucial when upgrading or installing a new system. I can't praise it enough.
jhc1115
Good news for Win7 users. This quick download will put you right in the driver's seat on screen. You soon realize the quick responsive choice menu of familiar XP is at hand."Classic Shell" provides an escape from the bloated menu Win 7 offers even in it's most basic personalization. A good mix of past control but new OS dynamic.
Pcs800
When windows 7 came out I was beside myself at the fact that MS omitted the classic menu style. The way I arrange my menu simply cannot be accommodated with the overly compact new style. Being unable to get classic buttons like delete, etc. Onto the explorer toolbar was annoying too. This program took care of everything. If you've got vista or 7, you need this.
Gorlash
The Champion of the Start Menu replacements!! A magnificent program, beautiful with any of the skins, thoroughly configurable. It even works with Windows 8 (where it is even MORE desperately needed!). Highly recommended. Don't pay for a Start Menu program until you've tried this one! You'll never go back...
Shodan816
I have been using 'Classic Start Menu' by Ordinarysoft fot the past several years - until I recently discovered 'Classic Shell.' This utility is superior to Classic Shell in virtually every aspect and adds numerous features for tweaking Windows Explorer and IE9 on top of that. You have nothing to lose by giving it a try. You will love it.
cowidster
I have use this for a long time, now I write this to say thanks! It is simply perfect! Thank you very much for the creator of this software, I really appreciate it.
Sylvia
Excellent program! I didn't like that I had to click to access my programs. Now everything is a lot more accessible. Thanks!
Lee
So happy to get no frills clasic look using windows 7. Sometimes Microsoft changes thing that do not need to be changed.
Raargh
I cannot properly express my thanks for Classic Shell in words - I want to use $. :) Do you have PayPal? Please keep up the good work.

Terrific article! This is the kind of information that are meant to be shared across the internet. Shame on Google for no longer positioning this put up upper!

I just found your blog after searching for Classic Shell. I held out as long as I could - ran XP until August, 2012. There's nothing I can add to what you've said: Classic Shell speaks for itself.

Microsoft has chosen a direction with Vista/Aero, and not looked back. I have an XP VM in Windows 7 which allows the goodness to continue for perhaps 2 years, then what?

I wish there was a fix for the distracting, glitzy, bloated UI in Vista/7, but what can you do?

I tried OSX, it was just as limiting as Vista/7. There are some distraction-free distributions of linux, but linux changes so frequently, 'backwards-compatibility' and 'muscle memory' doesn't really exist in the linux desktop. Maybe get used to old DOS applications again and run them in a VM?

I sure hope somebody makes a sane mobile OS [but I'm not holding my breath].
